Chronicle Of The World

Average review score:

Unique and entertaining approach to world history
Chronicle of the World is one of the more interesting "texts" I have ever read. It chronicles events from the begining of time to modern-day. Each page is written in newspaper headline format covering events occurring simultaneously throughout different parts of the world making reading easy and enjoyable.

For the first time I can scan an historical text and get an overview of events that have occurred simultaneously throughout various regions of the globe. I would recommend this book to both the high school student as well as college student. Regardless of age, all would find Chronicle of the World very informative and entertaining.

Great history reference
A single huge book that outlines world history in chronoligical order with all civilizations represented. Events are recorded in news article format. One can turn to a given date in time and read articles about what was going on in Constantinople, Tikal Bangalore and Rome in that year. All matter of fact with little or no modern revisionist bias.

A Vivid Account of World History
A delightful read, Chronicle of the World covers over 3 million years of human history. Full of colorful illustrations, it portrays the worlds greatest civilizations, noble leaders, and evil tyrants in a easy to read newspaper format. Each article is written just like as if it was barely reported. A wonderful read, it is perfect for the student or the lover of history. An easy to use index lets you find the information quickly and easily. As either a reference tool or for serious reading, Chronicle of the World is invaluable.

One of my favorites
This is a light-hearted, funny book. I am way beyond the suggested age level, but i still read all the books in this series every other year. This series is one of two other books that has EVER made me laugh out loud, even when i was younger. So give the gift of laughter to a special kid in your life with this whole series!!

Enjoyable Book
This book was really entertaining, and I have read it more than once. I have not read a better book than this about what kids did in the past etc. It had intresting situation and intresting characters and I recomend it for everyone!

Sleeping Beauty
Published in Hardcover by Atheneum (August, 1994)
Author: Mercer Mayer
Average review score:

A fairy tale made believable!
It seems like every illustrator in the world has done a version of some fairy tales, especially "Sleeping Beauty." It offers great pictures, after all. But Mercer Mayer did something different... he added zest to the tale! He sets it in Celtic Britain, with lots of Celtic motifs added to the illustration. He also starts before the King got married, so we get a brief idea of who the King and Queen are who want a child so badly, and why the wicked fairy was not invited to the christening (and sort-of why it offended her). The Blue Faerie and the Star Faerie are your leading players in here -- once again, Sleeping Beauty herself is fairly passive (only in Robin McKinley's "Spindle's End" is she the active heroine) -- but the tale doesn't suffer. We even learn more about the prince, his relationship to the fairies and Sleeping Beauty, and why he had to love her "more than life" to wake her up. This book, along with beautiful illustrations (even if he does sometimes go overboard with the hair), is chock full of ideas, seeds... images and suggestions that say, "This should have been a novel." At any rate, you will appreciate the explanation behind the characters as well as the beautiful art.

school project
In this story the kind and the queen have a baby. So they decided to throw a party, everyone was invited, but the wicked fairy. The three good fairies waved their wands over the baby granting her very special gifts. The first was beauty, then kindness, then the wicked fairy came and said when she is sixteen, she will prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and she will die. Then the last good fairy said she will not die, but she will sleep until a prince comes and breaks the spell, so they burned all of the spinning wheels they found except for one. Eventually when she turned sixteen she found some stairs and walked up them, found the only last spinning wheel that there was and reached out to touch it, and pricked her finger. Then she went to sleep on a little bed. The three little good fairies put a sleeping spell on the castle. Only the prince could break the spell, the wicked fairy made a great forest of roses around the castle. The castle slept for 100 years. The prince found the castle one day and cut through the rose forest with his magic sword. After the wicked fairy turned into a dragon he fought her and won. He went into the castle and found sleeping beauty sleeping...

I think this is a good book for kids to read, it teaches you to always invite everyone so you dont make them feel bad, and to never say something bad will happen to someone cause it might.

Distinctly orginal version of a classically loved tale.
This is a beautiful rendition of the classic tale. The author has creatively added more background to the characters. This gives each more depth and makes their interactions more complex. One inventive twist of the tale is that the prince is the son of the fairy who cast the curse. This sets up an intriguing juxtaposition between the two families and the fact that the princess is mortal while the prince is immortal. The author adds new themes to the story such as the sacrifices of love, the freedom forgiveness brings, and most importantly the eternal quality of love. The illustrations in this book are very dramatic and have an ethereal quality. The total work is captivating and memorable.

Bike and Brew America: Midwest Region

Good Concept
This gives quite a bit of information on the mountain biking trails, I just wished it listed more of them.

TIME TO PLAN A ROAD TRIP
I read this book with interest....I like to ride, and who doesn't like to drink beer? This book is nicely written and an easy read. I've riden many of the trails in Michigan, and some in the surrounding states, plus I've eaten in some of the brew pubs also, so, as I review this, I believe I am qualified to give FIVE STARS *****. Mercer hits the "nail on the head" with his description of the rides, and the food/beer appears to be on track also....but I think I have a passion for a pale ale rather than a porter. I've started traveling more for work, I'll pack my bike and this book......every work trip will become a road trip. Buy it!!!!

Just Me and My Puppy

Very Cute
I thought this book was very cute. My daughter who is 3 loves it. She wanted us to read it every nite for the first week. I would highly recommend this book to anyone with small children. It portrays all the responsibilities that come along with having a puppy in a very amusing way.

Another Little Critter Winner!
This story (about a boy who brings a puppy home) is told from the boy's point-of-view, but the illustrations are another matter!

The boy says, "I am teaching my puppy how to heel" and we see the boy wrapped in the leash... the puppy straining to break free and play. The boy says, "...he already knows how to fetch" and we see him throwing a stick. On the following page, an angry lady is chasing the puppy... who is running away from her with a lady's hat in his mouth!

The story ends on a sweet note.

I really love how the Little Critter books focus on events that are real to children, and focus so much on the family in such a positive, light way.

And my children love this book.

Just Teach Me, Mrs. K. : Talking, Reading, and Writing with Resistant Adolescent Learners
Published in Paperback by Heinemann (November, 1994)
Author: Mary Mercer Krogness
Average review score:

Teach us teachers, Mrs. K!
This book was very helpful to me as I developed a Writing Lab curriculum for 7th and 8th graders. The author gives a lot of insight about how to motivate and create rapport with reluctant writers. She serves as an example on how to make this type of student feel successful in an environment where he often faces nothing but failure. The advice on how to guide students to take ownership of their work and develop writing pieces of their own design was also helpful. Perhaps what I liked best was the honesty with which the book was written. The author never claims to "know it all", and shares many stories of her disappointments and failures.

A motivational fresh perspective . . .
Picking this book up while on maternity leave from teaching 7th grade English was a mentally refreshing and exciting experience. Through writing about her classroom approach, Mary Krogness revitalized my passion for teaching and gave me a new perspective on motivating all of my students -- especially the reluctant ones.

I highly recommend this book for any middle level English/communication teacher.

Runaway Voyage

Author: Betty Cavanna

Arduous escape to a fresh start
An excellent depiction of early Seattle history: the voyage of "Asa Mercer's girls." Recommended to supplement NW history classes. Offers a different perspective from the many Oregon Trail novels. Makes me wish I could be there at the beginning to build a new city.

I remember loving it.
I read this book in 9th grade and remember loving it. I hope I can find a copy of it. It's left quite an image in my mind (which only really good books can do).

DOUBLE TAKE
Published in Hardcover by Atria Books (July, 1997)
Author: Judy Mercer
Average review score:

Hard to Follow
This book had a good plot, but it was extremely hard to follow. There were too many characters that were not fully developed. The story kept jumping around from city to city and character to character which was very confusing. Ikept having to go back a few chapters to pick up on the character and storyline that was being presented.

An outstanding sequel to "Fast Forward". Top notch!
What a pleasure it is to read an intelligently written suspense novel peopled with real characters (including a dog) you care about.

Two years was too long to wait for the sequel to FASTFORWARD but DOUBLE TAKE was worth it.Number two in author JUDY MERCER'S Ariel Gold series is set for the most part in South Carolina, on Kiawah Island and in Charleston.A dividend is the down home flavor of the area. It's a stark contrast to Los Angeles, where Ariel works as a TV newsmagazine producer and where the subplot unfolds.

There is something a little old-fashioned about Ariel and her family and friends.Could be it's that they'rer decent. Even the bad guys aren't so much scummy as they are fallible.DOUBLE TAKE is funny one minute and stirring the next, and it's satisfying from start to finish

The sequal is even better than the original
Two years ago, Ariel Gold had nothing but adoptive parents who never cared for her. Since then she has learned who her natural family is, though an unknown twin sister died in the explosion that left Ariel suffering from amnesia (FAST FORWARD). Ariel is vacationing at her wealthy grandfather's South Carolina estate. While there, she meets John William Barron, an old friend of her deceased sibling. They talk providing Ariel insight into her twin and the realization that John has some deep mental problems. That evening long after they shared a good night, John apparently kills himself. ...... Because of his connection to her sister, Ariel decides to investigate John's death, hoping she can learn more about her family. As Ariel digs deeper, she learns that the truth can be ugly and be disguised by a dastardly prevarication. The closer to learning more about herself through contact with her family, the less Ariel wants to know. Sometimes the truth hurts. ..... The second novel in the Ariel Gold series is awarded a silver medal for a fine and stirring novel that adds much to fleshing out the lead protagonist and her family history. The story line is split between Ariel's quest and her boss's search for a missing individual. Both tales in of themselves are well written and fun to read, but do tend to occasionally trip over each other. In spite of this minor flaw, readers will enjoy the thrills emulating from DOUBLE TAKE as Judy Mercer demonstrates a growing talent that should take her to the top.. ........Harriet Klausner

Just Me and My Mom

Little Critter Just Me and Mom
The little critter is a wonderful series of books.

Especially this one because it talks to kids about the

importance of staying with your parent when your out in the city.

You could get lost or even kidnapped if you wander away. This

book tells you in a fun way why to stay with your mom and

spending quality time with her can bring you to closer

together. That is why this litte critter book is a good choice.

A book that I don't mind reading again & again!
As it chronicles a day with Mom, this book provides interesting pictures and opportunities to discuss some imporant issues like staying with mom in public places. Mercer Mayer manages to provide adult interest with humorous illustrations and by presenting situations that most parents hope to avoid but just might happen on "one of those days."

Little Critter always gets big "Hoorays"!
Little Critter books are my two year old's favorite books. He feels in touch with Critter and easily identifies with many of Critters adventures. "Just Me and My Mom" is also a favorite of mine, for obvious reasons. Parents can also pick up on little lessons in parenting. "Just Me and My Mom" teaches children that being adventuresome can also get you into trouble if you're not careful. Independence is rewarded however, children need to learn about being responsible for losing money (tickets), not wandering from parents in public places, respecting authority, and obeying the rules. Mercer Mayer's illustrations are aslo filled with activity and hidden critters. Every time we read his books we find something new on every page. This book is a wonderful look at a day a tourism from the eyes of a child. I applaud this and and every book by this talented author/illustrator.

A Very Special Critter (A Golden Look-Look Book)
Published in Paperback by Golden Books Pub Co Inc (April, 1993)
Authors: Gina Mayer, Mercer Mayer, and Coyle
Average review score:

what little kids think
The book A Very Special Critter is about a young kid that has a new critter coming to his class the book shows kids that no matter what every one wants to be treated the same and that everyone has feeling no matter what. It shows kids that no matter what some one looks like on the outside it should'nt matter it should matter whats in the inside. I also feel that this book does in a way focus on how different the new critter is. But over all i think the book is good.

A great book for children to learn about disabilities
This a positive look at those in wheelchairs. It would be a good choice for teachers with a child in the class who has a disability

Equality
I found this book to be very good and interesting. This is a book about a kid that is in a wheelchair and some of the students have never been around that before. This book is about how it doesn't matter if your different, you should still be treated the same. This is a good quality for kids to learn at an early age so when they do encounter it they will know how to act.It is even hard for people my age to accept how people are.
